How do challenges work?

Brawn uses challenges to engage members each week. A new challenge is released, designed by one of our fitness consultants, and members can track their results against others. Gyms can also create their own challenges.

There are a plethora of challenges and challenge formats available to members. Gyms can design their own, or use the ones that Brawn provides each week (and month), designed by our very own fitness consultants.

There are a variety of formats available including

As Many Reps As Possible (AMRAP) or Finisher Challenge

Complete as many reps as possible on one move for a short period of time. For example, 60-second pushup AMRAP. Members would compete to get the highest number of reps. Members are ranked on a leaderboard by the total number of reps they were able to achieve. They can also track their own previous attempts and try to beat their last score. Within the Brawn app, members start the challenge, a count-in appears to allow members to get ready,  and then a timer begins ticking. Once the timer has run out, members are asked to add the total number of reps they completed. Once they submit the challenge, they will be presented with a score, in this case reps, and a comparison against others who have completed this challenge. There will also be a previous attempts section which shows previous scores as well as a leaderboard which can be filtered from global to my gym, friends, and people like me.

XRM or Rep Max Challenge

An XRM or Rep Max challenge requires members to lift the heaviest weight they can for reps. For example, a 10 rep leg press challenge requires members to move as much as they can safely do for 10 reps. Members are ranked by max weight or Brawn Points. They can also track their own previous attempts and try to beat their last score. There is no time limit on this, the emphasis is on safety. Within the Brawn app, members are asked to add the weight they completed. Once they submit the challenge, they will be presented with a score, in this case weight, and a comparison against others who have completed this challenge. There will also be a previous attempts section which shows previous scores as well as a leaderboard which can be filtered from global to my gym, friends, and people like me.

Workout Challenge

This requires members to complete a prescribed workout which can contain any number ofexercises and achieve the highest Brawn Points score they can. Workouts can include supersets, AMRAPs, timed movements, distance based movements, rounds and EMOMs. Members are ranked on the highest points score achieved. Within the Brawn app, members start the challenge and begin by confirming the weights for the challenge. Members are free to change the weight and reps they managed to complete. After confirming the weights, they are free to amend the weight and reps again. Once they submit the workout, they will be presented with a score, in this case Brawn Points, and a comparison against others who have completed this challenge. There will also be a leaderboard which can be filtered from global to my gym, friends, and people like me.

Timed Challenge

This challenge requires members to complete a usually simple workout as fast as they can. Members are ranked on time, with the fastest time being top of the leaderboard. Within the Brawn app, members start the challenge and begin by confirming the weights for the challenge. Once confirmed, a count-in appears to allow members to get ready,  and then a timer begins ticking. Once the timer has run out, members are asked to confirm the reps and weights completed. Once they submit the challenge, they will be presented with a score, in this case time, and a comparison against others who have completed this challenge. There will also be a leaderboard which can be filtered from global to my gym, friends, and people like me.

Rounds or As Many Rounds As Possible Challenge

A Rounds challenge is a workout that members are expected to repeat as many times as they can within a time period. The workout can include any number of elements within it. Members are ranked on the total number of rounds they managed to complete including any partial rounds. Within the Brawn app, members start the challenge and begin by confirming the weights for the challenge. Once confirmed, a count-in appears to allow members to get ready, and then a timer begins ticking. Members can log each round as they complete it and will be presented with a “lap” time, which is used to push members on subsequent rounds. Once the timer has run out, members are asked to confirm the full rounds they completed, as well as how many exercises they completed on the last round, assuming they didn’t complete the last round fully. Once they submit the challenge, they will be presented with a score, in this case rounds, and a comparison against others who have completed this challenge. There will also be a leaderboard which can be filtered from global to my gym, friends, and people like me.

Every Minute On the Minute (EMOM) Challenge - In Development

A workout driven by time, every minute the exercise changes and members are required to complete the prescribed exercise finishing when they hit the target or when the time runs out whichever comes sooner. The challenge is expected to be completed within a certain time. Examples include 1 minute Assault Bike, as well as something simpler such as 12 goblet squats. Members are ranked on Brawn points, the higher the score, the higher the score, the higher position on the leaderboard. Within the Brawn app, members start the challenge and begin by confirming the weights for the challenge. Once confirmed, a count-in appears to allow members to get ready, and then a timer begins ticking. Once the timer has run out, members are asked to confirm the weights they completed. Once they submit the challenge, they will be presented with a score, in this case Brawn Points, and a comparison against others who have completed this challenge. There will also be a leaderboard which can be filtered from global to my gym, friends, and people like me.

Chipper - In development

A list of exercises often sandwiched by cardio exercises. Members can chip away at the large number of reps in any fashion they wish. Within Brawn members begin by confirming the weights they intend to begin with. Once the challenge begins, a count-in will appear to allow the member to get ready, then the timer will begin. They are free to alter the weight during the challenge. They continue to log all the movements in any order they wish by swiping or deducting reps in the app. Once all the moves have been chipped away, the final move begins. Once they submit the challenge, they will be presented with a score, in this case Brawn Points, and a comparison against others who have completed this challenge. There will also be a leaderboard which can be filtered from global to my gym, friends, and people like me.
